Fogo

Cape Verde's active volcano and wine island

Fogo — overview

Fogo is dominated by Pico do Fogo, a 2,829 m active stratovolcano that last erupted in 2014–2015. The climb from the Chã das Caldeiras crater village is one of the great volcano hikes of the Atlantic. Around the caldera, families grow vines in the black volcanic ash and produce the country's best wine (Manecom, Chã). The small capital, São Filipe, has a walkable colonial centre of colored sobrados looking out over the sea and the neighbouring island of Brava.
