Green valleys and authentic rural Cape Verde

São Nicolau — overview

São Nicolau is one of the least-visited islands in Cape Verde and one of the most rewarding for travelers looking for quiet, green landscapes and traditional village life. The inland capital Ribeira Brava is a pocket of colonial architecture set in a deep valley, and the dramatic Monte Gordo natural park offers excellent hiking among dragon trees and terraced fields. The small port of Tarrafal de São Nicolau is the main dive base, with volcanic seabeds rich in manta rays and big pelagic fish.
