Maio

Endless empty beaches, just off Santiago

Maio — overview

Maio is the quietest of the eastern islands and a paradise for travelers who want beach without a resort. The sleepy capital, Vila do Maio (Porto Inglês), has a single row of pastel houses along the bay, and kilometres of empty white-sand beaches stretch both north and south. Inland, dry plains give way to acacia-dotted savanna and salt flats. Loggerhead turtles nest here in summer. There is almost no nightlife — but plenty of fresh fish, friendly small guesthouses and absolute tranquility.
