Very good breakfast and a delicious dinner, with exquisite fish — probably the best meal of my 12-day trip to Cape Verde. The room is simple but functional. Keep in mind that there is no electricity in the volcanic caldera at night. The staff is very friendly, and you can book the excursion to climb Pico do Fogo directly with them. The views arw unbeatable

We were traveling around Cabo Vrede and decided to go hiking to vulcano on island Fogo. Found out about this place and made a bookong with them. Staff is extra friendly and very helpful and also the food was delicious. They arrange us guide Manhol for the hiking and this was another great expreience. For all travelers which are coming here we would highly recommend this place.

Fantastic place to stay before climbing the pick. Good room, feeling all the time like you are guest in their home. The best thing was the restaurant, amazing local dishes, delicious and intersting (e.g. Had some chicken with fruits) at very good price. Can totally recommend.

If you take a reservation seriously (as in “if I book a place I expect it to be kept for me) avoid this place. We booked a room at Casa Helena 10 days in advance, then we even received messages from them that we responded to and engaged in chatting about usual stuff (eg. ETA, need of info). The check-in day they wrote us to confirm and then, 15 min later and one hour before our arrival, they said they have a problem with the room. The issue seemed to be that a customer wanted to stay another night… as other people reservations wouldn’t mean anything! They just offer us to find another accommodation, instead of offering the same suggestion to their customer who wanted to stay… After we had to choose another option, once in the village we met other travellers, and a group we hiked with also had a booking cancelled by Casa Helena. I honestly don’t know how it is possible that a b&b owner does not understand the meaning of “reservation”.

One of the best experiences we ever had: It is so nice to stay at the foot of Pico do Fogo. The accomodation is a cherry on the top. Cecilio and Helena were so kind to us! They prepared and cooked each meal freshly and it was sooo delicious! We‘d recommend to everyone to stay at least two nights there and enjoy Portela! It is very familiar and safe there.
